Welcome Film Lovers...
Hello and welcome to That's Rentertainment -- the last locally owned and operated video store in the Champaign-Urbana / University of Illinois area. That's Rentertainment caters to film fans (and fanatics) who have grown tired of the typical Blockbuster fare. We specialize in International, independent, classic American and Art House films on DVD (with a handful of VHS tapes left over that have never been released on DVD). With almost 45,000 DVDs and just under 5,000 BluRay discs, That’s Rentertainment has the largest collection of movies in the entire Champaign-Urbana area -- if not all of Illinois. We get new movies every week -- if you want to be kept up to date about them sign up for our weekly e-mail update or check out our New Arrivals page. Membership is free (requiring only 2 photo IDs, or an ID and credit card) and rentals can be as cheap as $1.00 per disc. So, come on down and check out what you've been missing!

This Week's New Release Message
Ballet 422
The Loft
Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles
The Seventh Son

Greetings everyone,

There were only a couple of blockbuster's released this week: "The Loft" (w/Karl Urban, James Marsden and Wentworth Miller) and "Seventh Son" (w/Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore and Ben Barnes). But, there were some interesting smaller titles: "Ballet 422" (2015) follows New York City Ballet's Justin Peck as he creates a new work, Nigel Dick's "Berlin Calling" (2015; tagline: "An extraordinary journey from WWII to the punk era and back again") and Chuck Workman's "Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles" (2014). On the TV front, we picked up: Hello Ladies (the complete series + the movie), Major Crimes S3 and Ray Donovan S2 -- and, a new one for the International Mystery Series wall: "Look of a Killer" (Finland). We also picked up a couple of new Criterion titles: Charles Chaplin's "Limelight" (1952) and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's "The Merchant of Four Seasons" (1971). Lastly, a handful of interesting BluRay titles: Terry Jones' "Erik the Viking" (1979), "Imitation of Life" (both the 1934 and the 1959 versions), Cameron Crowe's "Singles" (1992) and "Yellowbeard" (1983). You can check out all of this week's new arrivals below.

Remember, we are now on our somewhat shorter Summer hours:
Monday - Thursday (11:00-8:00), Friday (11:00 - 9:00), Saturday (noon-9:00) and Sunday (noon - 8:00)

Once again, Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" (2001) is in the #1 position of this week's Top Renting Japanese Animation list. He also directed the other two films on the podium: "The Wind Rises" (2013) and "My Neighbor Totoro" (1988). As expected from the grandfather of the Anime world, he also landed the 4th ("Princess Mononoke"), the 6th ("Kiki's Delivery Service") and the 7th ("Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind") positions. Hiroyuki Okiura's "Letter to Momo" (2011) broke the Miyazaki straight run through the Top 10 by taking 5th, Isao Takahata's "The Tale of The Princess Kaguya" (2013) took 8th and "Attack on Titan" rounds out the Top 10. Goro Miyazaki's (Hayao's son) first film "Tales from Earthsea" (2006) has been in the Top 10 since its release, this time landing in 9th. There even are more Hayao Miyazaki films scattered throughout the Top 100 (he's directed 26 titles so far -- you'll find them mostly towards the beginning of the list). If you are a regular in the Anime section, odds are pretty good you've seen everything mentioned so far already. Even so, scan through the Top 100 list, there may be a few titles you haven't seen yet. However, if you are new to the world of Anime, your best bet is probably to try a Miyazaki title, go with the classic "Akira" or start one of the more popular series (Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, One Piece, etc). Here are the Top Renters from the Anime section:

Have a great week...

What's the "The Itty Bitty Bike Shop"?
Right when you walk into Rentertainment, you may have noticed what might very well be the smallest bike shop in the world (right now it's about 2' x 2') sitting where the Pepsi machine used to sit. We call it the "Itty Bitty Bike Shop". It's got all the basics for your commuting needs: chain lube, inner tubes, lights, multi-tools, patch kits, some reflectors, tire levers, water bottles, locks, and, of course, the Urbana-Champaign Bike map. We've also got a pump (schrader and presta) in case you need some air. Ride safely! We've got lots more stuff at the main IttyBittyBikeShop (tucked away just north of Downtown Urbana in Parasol Records)

Essential Art House Films: 50 Years of Janus Films
Quite a few years ago (2007!) I decided to watch the entire Essential Art House box set -- one film per week in the order presented in the box, alphabetical chronological order. I wrote one paragraph reviews of each film as I watched them. If you want, you can read the reviews here.
